What is ChatGPT, and why should you care?

We’re addressing the elephant in the room and on the minds of all entrepreneurs everywhere; ChatGPT. The AI writing tool that’s been the topic of conversation for months. With questions like “will ChatGPT replace Google?” or “will ChatGPT take my job?” or “is ChatGPT even accurate or ethical?” and so many more. Well, we are here to break that all down!

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that allows you to ask a question, ask for advice, ask it to do a task, and it will conversationally assist you like you are truly talking to a friend on the other end of the chat. In November, it opened to the public completely free. (and it still is!)

While the world of AI isn’t new — hi there Alexa and Siri— ChatGPT is a big deal. Plus the whole launch of this tool is an absolutely genius marketing strategy. By launching to everyone for free, they got this tool into the hands of the users quickly in order to generate hot demand.

What are ChatGPT’s Limitations?

All good things come with limitations, and ChatGPT is no different. It can’t do everything (not yet, anyway), and here are some issues you might run into:

  • Biased Language: ChatGPT may reflect biases present in the data it was trained on.
  • Limited Understanding of Context: This tool processes language on a word-by-word basis, and it doesn’t always understand the context of a sentence or conversation as a whole.
  • Inability to Reason: It lacks the ability to reason or understand complex concepts.
  • Limited Knowledge: While ChatGPT has access to vast amounts of information, it is still limited by the data it was trained on. Right now ChatGPT can only fetch data prior to the year 2021.
  • Inability to Learn from Experience: ChatGPT is a pre-trained model that does not learn from its interactions with users— like the horror movies you’ve likely seen.

Guess who gave me all these limitations… ChatGPT themselves! Seriously, go give it a try!

What does Google say about ChatGPT and AI-created content?

There has been a lot of back and forth on this topic. The question everyone is asking— will Google blacklist articles written with AI? The short answer is no. We know a big concern is how Google will respond to ChatGPT content. It’s no secret that Google has been focusing on prioritizing quality content in search results. Because of all this speculation, Google formally came out with a statement on this topic. Here’s what they have to say about it.

If you create quality content, you can and will absolutely rank on Google whether you use an AI tool, like ChatGPT, or not.

Using AI doesn’t give content any special (or negative) gains. It’s just content. If it is useful, helpful, original, and satisfies aspects of E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authority, and trust), it might do well in search. If it doesn’t, it might not.

In other words, who cares who made the content… is it good content?

What other AI tools are out there?

ChatGPT isn’t the first AI tool to launch publicly. There are others that haven’t gotten as much buzz but are just as powerful. It doesn’t stop at writing either. Some AI tools will build code, create smooth recordings of audio, speak written text, animate static photos, create new music, edit your photos and videos and so much more. Here are just a few:

  • Jasper: one of the most popular AI writing tools and also a higher price point than most.
  • ChatSonic: unlike ChatGPT, ChatSonic is trained and powered by ‘Google Search’ to chat with you on current events and trending topics in real-time.
  • You: an AI search engine you control with the ability to protect your data while you browse the web. It’s free of tracking and invasive ads.
  • Ubersuggest Labs: for SEO specific AI writing such as SEO titles, meta descriptions, headlines and more.
  • Wordtune: ever had a thought, but it wasn’t worded quite right? This tool will rewrite your thoughts in a compelling and authentic way.
  • Dall-E 2: ChatGPT but for images!
  • Noty: AI powered meeting assistant to help you transcribe notes and action items.
  • Elicit: an AI research assistant tool to help you answer research questions, brainstorm, summarize content and more.
  • Character AI: a science-fiction AI tool that allows you to build your own Characters and bring them to life.
  • Rationale: built to help you make better decisions when you are in a tight spot.

Do we think ChatGPT will take over Google? Is Google too late?

Probably not. But should Google be scared? Maybe a little. We did the research, and Bing actually indexes more content than Google overall. In theory, the more data you have, the better an AI integration will work.

However, how good is the data? We know that Google is very picky in terms of what it indexes. Therefore, the quality of the data could be a huge signal of performance when it comes to an AI search engine.

First doesn’t always mean better. So we will have to just wait and see what happens when Google launches its own… BARD. Right now, this tool is only in the hands of a few select special users. No news yet on when this will launch to the public.

As Entrepreneurs, how have we been using AI in our business?

Obviously as SEO nerds, we are obsessed with finding new opportunities to use AI in our business. SO naturally we’ve tested a few. Here are some of our favorite ways to use AI (so far!)

  • Podcast episode titles + descriptions
  • SEO titles and meta descriptions with Ubersuggest Labs
  • Email subject lines
  • Blog outlines and alternate keywords to write for
  • Brand messaging specifically with personality adjectives, voice and tone direction
  • Social content ideas

What’s our final say on ChatGPT?

Our recommendation is to give it a try. This tool is guaranteed to save you time and stress. It will take practice to remember and find ways to incorporate this into your business, but this is the future. There’s no point in running from it.

Also, remember this is a tool. Not a replacement for hiring someone on your team. It should support your business, not completely take over for a team member. We still believe in the power of a creative brain!
