Behind the Scenes of Starting a Nonprofit, with Terra Pickett from Gloves for Grief

Terra first came to us to get help with her website SEO. We loved working with her and learning more about her nonprofit, Gloves for Grief. Gloves for Grief creates experiences that promote healing and offer an opportunity to connect with others who truly understand the pain grief can hold. Whether it’s the loss of a spouse, parent, child, or friend, everyone is welcome. We invited Terra to the pod this week to share behind the scenes of starting a nonprofit. We can’t wait to share her story with you!

What You’ll Hear In This Episode:

  • Would you share a little about your story for us?
  • What’s the biggest difference in deciding to be a for-profit or a non-profit?
  • Could you walk us through the early stages of starting the nonprofit?
  • What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when getting this business off the ground?
  • What strategies did you use to raise funds and generate support for your cause in the early days?
  • What advice would you give to someone who is considering starting a nonprofit organization?

5 Ways to Support a Nonprofit

Sometimes, people think the only way to support a nonprofit is by writing a check. But there are a lot of other ways to support the mission of these amazing organizations.

Volunteering

You can offer your professional skills, volunteer for events, or commit to ongoing volunteering. You can also provide a space for a nonprofit to host events. Any amount of dedication and support of your time is appreciated.

Fundraising

Another way is to fundraise on the nonprofit’s behalf. Fundraising is how nonprofits continue working toward their mission. You can create a personal fundraising page and ask friends and family to contribute. You can also host fundraising events, like:

  • Bake sales
  • Car washes
  • Charity walk/runs
  • Silent auction
  • Golf tournament

Raising Awareness

Raising awareness on social media is an easy thing to do for a nonprofit. Word of mouth is so powerful, so telling your network about the organization can help them get support from more people.

Participate in Events

Showing up and supporting the organization’s events is a great way to engage with a nonprofit. Invite your friends and family, too!

Shop Their Merch

If they sell products, buy them for yourself or as gifts! Most times, all sales go towards the nonprofit’s mission.

Announcing Duo Gives Back

A lot of people feel uncomfortable asking for help. Asking for donations and support is something Terra struggled with when first starting Gloves for Grief. She has clearly grown since then because she asked us to help them with their website SEO. It was a no-brainer for us. We can relate to Terra’s story, and giving back to organizations that are doing good in the world is something we love doing.

This has been on our hearts for years, and it’s the perfect opportunity to announce our new partnership program! We are opening applications to work with one SEO and one branding client per year for free. We want to support the mission of amazing organizations out there who are doing life-changing work. If you or someone you know could benefit from our new Duo Gives Back program, fill out the application! We’d love to hear your story!
