We hear this all the time from our clients: ‘My website just doesn’t feel like me anymore.’ Maybe you’ve outgrown it. Maybe you cringe a little every time you have to drop the link. Or maybe you’re just not in a place to hire the best designer on the block—and that’s okay. We’ve been there and done all the DIY fixes, too.
So today, we’re talking about what to do when your site doesn’t reflect the business you’ve built (or the one you’re becoming). Whether you’ve DIY your website, are due for a glow-up, or are just not sure where to start, tune in!
And we’re not having this convo alone. We’re joined by Jen Olmstead from Tonic Site Shop, the queen of scroll-stopping design and punchy, personality-packed templates that convert. She’s here to spill her best advice on everything from DIY fixes and mistakes to knowing when it’s time for a website glow-up— and how to make your site work harder (and prettier) for you.
This one’s part pep talk, part strategy session, and all the motivation you need to finally feel proud of your website again.

#1 Clue Your Website No Longer Reflects the Business You’ve Grown Into
The most common clue Jen sees is that your website reflects where you’ve been, not where you’re going. This can be a big problem and can show up in a few different ways.
- You aren’t displaying your current work.
- Your prices are outdated.
- The messaging doesn’t match the vibe you’re putting out there.
- Your social media is updated, but your website isn’t.
People may find you on social media and think your content and brand are amazing. Then, when they want to learn more information about your services, they go to your website and end up disappointed or confused. It doesn’t feel like the same experience. Your website is stuck in the past while you’re continually growing and moving forward.
Making DIY Fixes and Updates to Your Website
Always remember to update your website with current packages or offers, pricing, content, and portfolio work! The great thing about Tonic templates is that they grow with your business. You can make DIY fixes and small tweaks here and there as you grow. You have the freedom to do what you want with them.
Jen says to approach your website as a work in progress, not a checkbox. Set a quarterly or bi-annual reminder to make some updates. Add it to your CEO Day or website working day list.
What’s Next for Tonic Site Shop? Going Deep, Not Wide
We asked Jen if she has any plans to expand Tonic Site Shop. She’s been asked to create Kajabi, WordPress, and Squarespace templates, but she and her team are laser-focused on Showit. They have a niche that works very well for them, and they chose to go deep into that niche rather than go wide and try to do a lot of different things.
We love this approach because it allows you to better serve those customers. You are an expert in what you do and can give valuable support to your clients.
Jen even shared that she homeschools her three kids, so she really doesn’t have a lot of time. She has to be particular about the things she chooses to spend her time on. Even though she only has a few hours to work, she is super productive and gets stuff done!
Our website has been built off the Paper Plane template since day one. We love Tonic Site Shop and really enjoyed this conversation with Jen! Check out their templates and get 15% off your order when you use code DUOCOLLECTIVE15.
