This episode is going to be hard for me, not going to lie! Choosing one thing… HOW!? So I had to think long and hard about this one, and I am feeling pretty good about the answer.
However, this answer does come with a caveat, and that is if you don’t have an optimized website. That is step one! Now if you have gone through the process of optimizing your website, whether that be DIYing it yourself, hiring someone, or leaning on your copywriter or web designer to help… here’s what I would focus on this year.
Focus On Growing Backlinks To Improve Your SEO
I believe backlinks have a huge impact on your domain authority. We talked a bit about this in episode 69 specifically on what domain authority is. Here’s a little reminder if you haven’t tuned into that episode yet.
What is Domain Authority?
A search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search engine result pages. The higher, the better. It dictates how authoritative you are on the topic or industry you serve.

Backlinks will improve your SEO because you’re increasing the number of links you have on the internet. If other sources trust you enough to link back to your website, Google will begin to trust you more as an authority, too.
4 Reasons I Love Teaching Backlink Outreach
This SEO strategy is seriously a game changer. It can make the most impact on your business in the littlest amount of time. Backlinks will improve your SEO, so these are some reasons why backlink outreach should be something to focus on this year:
1. You can choose a strategy that works for you.
If you don’t like blogging, then be a guest on podcasts. If you don’t like talking, then guest blog! Or If you don’t like either of those, then maybe do an interview-style blog post. If you want to speak at events… do that! Do what you like to do, because it’s much easier to stick to our goals when we enjoy our work!
2. It allows you to collaborate with other humans.
As a digital service provider, it can be so easy to keep your head down and do the work, but focusing on outreach gets us out. Speaking for myself, I am a much happier human when I get to meet other happy humans!
3. It’s an amazing form of brand awareness.
By collaborating with like-minded business owners, you can share audiences. The inquiries we get from guest podcasts we’ve been on are usually the exact type of client we want. The value of those clients is incredible.
4. It’s free!
Sure, it takes a little bit of time, but this marketing strategy is free.
However you want to snag that link, do it. Better yet, set yourself a goal this quarter.

- Be a guest on a podcast
- Do a blog swap with a business bestie
- Source a local publication to be interviewed with
