Today, we have Laura, our incredible website designer, on the podcast to talk about simple Showit customizations that can instantly add fun brand personality to your website (no intense coding required)!
We’re so excited to kick off this little series where we bring Laura on to talk all things Showit.
ALSO, if you haven’t heard the exciting news, she is now super offish because she just recently became an approved Showit Designer. We’re so incredibly excited for her!
Let’s Set the Stage
We want to start simple because Showit customization doesn’t have to mean coding or hiring a developer.
- This is not techy or overwhelming.
- These are quick wins you can do in an afternoon.
- The goal: move from “template-y” → “tailored + branded.”
Think of this like adding personality and polish, not rebuilding your entire site.
5 Beginner-Friendly Showit Customizations
Today, we’re keeping things pretty “beginner-friendly,” but as this series continues, we’ll start getting into some more advanced customizations you can make with your Showit website.
One of the reasons we chose Showit for our website is because of all of these simple ways to really enhance the website experience for your user. We break this down more on Episode #103, but a big part of that is the customization and subtle adds that you can easily incorporate into your website.
1. Button Hover Effects
Such a small tweak, but it makes your site feel interactive and elevated.
- Change colors on hover.
- Invert colors or add a slight movement.
- Even subtle = impactful.
It’s so easy to do now that Showit has native buttons. If you haven’t updated your site in the last year, it’s time to go in and give it REAL buttons (not just a rectangle and a text box).
The Point:
These tiny interactions build trust and make your brand feel more polished and intentional. Plus, website viewers have gotten accustomed to these subtle hints that something can be interacted with.
If you don’t have a hover effect, people may pause and say, “Wait, will this button work?”
Note About Accessibility
And be sure that your buttons are accessible from a color perspective. We often see colors that aren’t accessible and are really hard to read, especially when it comes to buttons.
When exploring colors, pop over to The Color Palette Studio and check those colors with their free contrast checker. This exercise will ensure your viewer sees both the main and hover colors.
The color hovers for a recent client launch of ours, Embody Health & Wellness, is a good example of beautiful contrast and just how that subtle action can add so much to your brand and website.
2. Scrolling Marquee
A scrolling marquee is one of those Showit customizations that looks way more advanced than it actually is. It’s basically a moving line of text or images that instantly gives your site more energy.
You can set this natively with a Showit slide animation with a large time “duration.” Though this will eventually reach the end of its animation. It’s generally not a problem because most people aren’t staying on the same spot on your website for over 400 seconds!
You can also do this with a simple embed code for a truly seamless marquee.
The Point:
These are great for adding touches of motion or interactivity to your site so it doesn’t look like a flat PDF. These are usually used to highlight offers, launches, events, or something fun coming up, like a new product or service you’re working on.
They also work great for highlighting brands or partnerships you want to showcase, as well as for a credibility banner.
For example, on our recent website launch for Shannon Leyko, you can see a scrolling image marquee highlighting some of the brands where she’s received recognition or has worked with.
3. Section Background Upgrades
Flat color backgrounds are fine… but we can do so much more with backgrounds to add some fun and unique depth.
- Add subtle gradients (native setting inside of Showit).
- Layer in textures.
- Use brand patterns or overlays.
- Play with lowering the opacity.
- Combine an image set as a fixed background and a texture overlaid as an image to give a really cool, subtle motion effect.
The Point:
This is where your branding can really come to life by highlighting your brand’s patterns, photos, gradients, and color palette. This is also such a simple and refreshing way to build creative breaks or sections into your website.
For our client Dana at DWD Travel, we had so much fun incorporating her beautiful brand patterns into backgrounds while layering in photos and brand elements.
You can see on her home page the multiple ways we’ve done this, but a great example is further down on the page in the “Take This Quiz” section.
4. Rotating Image or Icon
This is a playful way to add subtle movement to your site that lets you highlight your brand elements in a unique, simple way.
- Logos that spin (requires some code)
- Icons that wiggle back and forth (this could even be as simple as setting up canvas views in Showit, no coding required)
The Point:
Subtle movements like this are a great way to keep your viewers engaged and excited to keep scrolling, and it is such a simple thing to add to your Showit site.
We get tons of compliments on our little peace sign on our homepage and the fun elements that continue to have subtle movement throughout.
5. Image Change Opacity on Hover
This is a really cool effect for clickable images. It requires a shape and an image with one laid over the other. This Showit customization is another way to show that something can be interacted with, like the button hover effect.
What Not to Do
A little Showit customization goes a long way, but don’t overdo it.
- Don’t customize everything just because you can.
- Don’t ignore consistency across pages.
- Don’t make it “cool” without it still being strategic and user-friendly.
- Don’t go code crazy. Too much JavaScript can slow down your site (which is bad for SEO!).
The goal is to be intentional, not chaotic.
